On 9/11, Do a Good Deed

On 9/11, Do a Good Deed

The National Day of Service & Remembrance is observed on 9/11 each year. Last year more than 30 million people volunteered or found other ways to connect with their communities and loved ones on 9/11.  There are a myriad of ways to get involved (see examples and links below).

Truth be told, on September 11, 2012 most of us will be at work, in school or meeting other commitments. No matter.  Even if you can’t volunteer, you can catch and spread the spirit of volunteering.

United Way of Greater St. Louis is seeking more than 1,000 volunteers to participate in multiple volunteer projects throughout the city on Saturday, September 8, 2012. Events include preparing care packages for soldiers, beautifying a new bike path, and more.  Many of us remember that in the days following the September 11 attacks, a half a million people donated blood. United Way of Greater Philadelphia & Southern New Jersey is hosting the 9/11 Day of Service & Remembrance Memorial Blood Drive, to help continue this tradition of giving and volunteering.

Regardless of where you are and what you are doing on 9/11, I hope you’ll catch the spirit of volunteering and share it through a simple good deed. Share this blog and encourage others to join our volunteer movement in whatever form makes sense for them.  Here are some ideas for 9/11 and beyond:

  • Help keep kids in school and on the path to a successful life. Pledge to become a volunteer reader, tutor or mentor.
  • Find a volunteer opportunity through your local United Way.  It’s easy, just click here and scroll down to enter your zip code.
  • Learn how you can change the future by making a difference in the life of a child.
