In Good Company, we take a look at what it means to be a good citizen. It doesn't matter if you're a corporation or an individual, it's going to take all of us to achieve our bold goal of cutting the high school drop out rate in half. We start off with a panel discussion with Fortune 500 companies UPS, ITW and Caterpillar followed by an intimate conversation with a young man named Dahkota Brown, the founder of a peer-to-peer study group to help other young people in his community.
Law and Public Policy Division Caterpillar Foundation Representative
Kylene Anthony joined Caterpillar in 2003, and has had an unusual career path in her 10 years. She began with the company as a Flight Attendant on Caterpillar’s corporate jets where she then moved to the Corporate Public Affairs Division in 2007. Kylene was involved with the Corporate Customer Services group providing marketing and sales tours to dealers and customer from around the world ranging from military personnel to ambassadors, to private construction owners.
In 2009 she transferred into the Caterpillar Foundation where she currently is responsible for managing the employee/retiree matching gifts program. In addition, she is also responsible for Caterpillar’s U.S and International United Way campaign, which currently includes employees, retiree, and two subsidiary companies in over 300 locations in the U.S, Panama, and Monterrey, Mexico.
She has transformed the campaign from a manual process with little education to a 100% electronic with a structured top down approach that engages leaders and employees from all areas in the company. Awareness and education have been a driving factor in her strategic approach to the changes she has implemented, which have proven successful over the last 3 years she has been responsible for the campaign.
Director of Corporate Relations, The UPS Foundation
Lisa Lynn currently holds the position of Director of Corporate Relations manager for The UPS Foundation, which governs corporate citizenship for UPS. She is responsible for managing the Foundation’s Diversity investment strategy, communications, a global scholarship program for children of UPS employees, a portfolio of nearly 200 annual events supported by the Foundation, and the North American execution of the company’s nearly $60m annual United Way campaign which involves over 300,000 employees.
With 11 years of tenure at UPS prior to joining the Foundation in 2010, Lisa’s career has consisted of various positions in the Marketing Department. In 2000, she joined the company as Vice President of Market Development for UPS eVentures, a corporate incubator positioned to expand UPS’ portfolio of offerings into non-traditional web based businesses. In 2002, she accepted the position of Retail Marketing Director, where she led the market testing, and subsequent re-branding of nearly 4,000 locations of Mail Boxes, Etc. to The UPS StoreTM. Following the brand conversion, Lisa became the Director of Marketing for UPS’s retail channel operations. In 2009, she joined UPS’s product development team, creating and testing UPS Direct to Door, a UPS delivered media product.
Prior to UPS, Lisa was the SouthEast regional director of Business Development for MARCH/First, a consultancy working in the realm of e-commerce. She also held senior positions with other companies including an e-commerce start up offering designer apparel and in the women’s fashion industry.
A native of Chicago, IL, Lisa holds a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia. She resides in Atlanta, and is a certified kickboxing instructor who enjoys travel and managing the “career” of her Klee Kai puppy, Mojo, who frequently appears on Animal Plant.
Community Relations Program Leader, ITW
Katie O’Brien is a Community Relations Program Leader at ITW, a Fortune 200 company with pro-forma revenues last year totaling $17.0 billion. In her role, Katie strategically manages the United Way Campaign which in 2012 raised over $11,400,000. She is also responsible for the internal communication of the company’s key philanthropic benefits that include a formal volunteer program, scholarship opportunities, and a matching gift program.
Katie is an active member on the United Way Worldwide Global Corporate Leaders Advisory Council and Junior Achievement of Chicago, and the Young Leader's Society of United Way of Metropolitan Chicago. Katie holds a degree in English from Loyola University and an MBA from Lake Forest Graduate School of Management.
Community Giving Manager, 3M COMMUNITY AFFAIRS
Cindy earned her bachelor’s degree in Organizational Management and Communication at Concordia University in St. Paul. She has been with 3M for 37 years and is Manager, Community Giving in the Community Affairs Department. Her responsibilities include health and human services, arts, and environmental giving, the 3M Community Giving Campaign in partnership with United Way and product donations. She is the mother of 3 daughters and a proud grandmother of 3. Her volunteer activities include chair of Global Corporate Leadership Advisory Council for United Way Worldwide, advisory committee member for the J.C. and L.A. Duke Employees’ Assistance Fund of the Saint Paul Foundation, and member of the Corporate Advisory Council for American Red Cross. She is past chair of the River Falls Area Hospital Foundation, former board member of the Charities Review Council, and served as a Meals on Wheels volunteer for 20 years.
Fred J. Maahs, Jr.
Senior Director, Community Investment - Programs and National Partnerships, COMCAST
Fred is the national Board Chair for American Association of People with Disabilities, Honorary Director of the National Easter Seals Board of Directors, serves on United Way Worldwide’s Global Corporate Leadership Advisory Council, and was chosen to lead the Corporate Sponsor Council for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.
He serves as one of the founding members of the National Advisory Council for the Arts for Boys & Girls Clubs of America and as a member of United Way of Southern New jersey and Greater Philadelphia’s Employee Campaign Cabinet, and is the Co-Chair of the Greater Philadelphia Corporate Volunteer Council. In addition, he serves as a WICT mentor, and is a proud Big Brother in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Beyond School Walls program in Philadelphia. He has been involved in many community-based volunteer efforts for Easter Seals, served as Vice Chairperson for the Mayor of Wilmington’s Access Wilmington Committee, and served on the Winterthur Museum and Gardens Access Advisory Board.
Fred received his B.S. in Business Management from West Chester University, an A.S. in Business from Widener University, is certified in Corporate Social Responsibility from the Center for Corporate Citizenship at Boston College, and resides in Wilmington, Delaware.
