"Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve…You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love." - Martin Luther King, Jr.

As National Day of Service approaches, United Way invites you to join us in calling attention to the programs and policies that bring Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream to life. Policies that encourage and reward national service and volunteerism are critical to addressing education, income and health challenges and advancing the common good.

There are several ways that you can be a champion of service on Day of Service – or any time during the year. Join us in raising awareness about the importance of the Corporation for National and Community Service, AmeriCorps, and other programs that meet the needs of communities every day.

Here are four ways you can spread the word about national service:

  1. Contact your member of Congress. Tell Congress why promoting volunteerism and service strengthens our communities. Send a message to Congress today.

  2. Submit a photo for the National Service in Action Photo Contest. In order to best tell the story of national service, we need to use powerful images. With this is mind, our partners at Voices for National Service launched a “National Service in Action” Photo Contest. If you are passionate about national service, submit a photo.

  3. Pledge to serve. Become a volunteer reader, tutor, or mentor. Research proves that caring volunteers working with students of all ages, have the power to help kids boost academic achievement and put young people on track for a bright future.  Take the pledge now.

  4. Raise awareness on social media. Share a message on Facebook and Twitter about what national service means to you. Use hashtags #nationalservice and #liveunited. Sample messages are below.
  • National Day of Service is Jan 19. Make service a priority in America & fund #nationalservice #liveunited. Pls RT.

  • AmeriCorps supports the work of over 75,000 national service members annually. Protect #nationalservice #liveunited

  • Be a champion for service. Tell Congress to protect #nationalservice http://ow.ly/gKrA1 #liveunited

  • Celebrate the legacy of Dr. King & the spirit of service. Take action: http://ow.ly/gKrA1 #nationalservice #liveunited

Get involved as an Advocate. Be a voice for national service. It’s time to take action!
