Student United Way Leadership Retreat Preview

The year 2012 marks the 125th anniversary of the United Way movement. It also commemorates the fifth anniversary of Student United Way and the annual Student United Way Leadership Retreat. This year’s retreat, taking place September 14 – 16 at the Mary M. Gates Learning Center, is packed with exciting and informative sessions that will strengthen the management skills of club leaders while increasing their ability to make a positive impact. Sessions will include:

  • A skills-based recruitment, retention and management training with tips from experienced managers of Student United Ways. While the training will be led by United Way staff, the most fun and innovative ideas will probably come from our awesome student leaders (see – UC Riverside and United Way of the Inland Valleys Mardi Gras Chili Cookoff).
  • A hands-on service project to help Student United Ways take part in our one million volunteer readers, tutors and mentors challenge. You’ll have to visit the United Way Blog after the retreat for all the details, but I will say there are a lot of Dr. Seuss books here at United Way Worldwide.
  • A grant writing workshop led by Mike Minks, Director of Outreach & Innovation for Youth Service America. YSA has been empowering young people to make a difference in their communities since 1986 and recently partnered with United Way Worldwide by setting a goal to recruit 100,000 volunteer readers, tutors and mentors. This weekend Mike will provide our student leaders with invaluable tips on creating projects, finding youth-focused grants and writing winning proposals.
  • A peak at the engine driving United Way’s social media presence and a tutorial to help students bring LIVE UNITED to life on their Facebook pages and websites.

All of this will be taking place against the backdrop of historic Old Town Alexandria and Washington, DC. If you can’t join us for the retreat, check for live updates on our Facebook page or look and listen in on Instagram and Twitter (#liveunited).
