2009 National United Way Tocqueville Society Award®

Hasu and Hersha Shah epitomize what it means to be humanitarians.  They are living proof that through determination and dedication, newcomers to this country can succeed in extraordinary ways.

The Shahs came to the United States in 1964; and, through their hard work and perseverance, have helped build a business empire in the hospitality industry.  They have woven their commitment to helping humanity into every facet of their lives.  The Shahs have helped United Way broaden its base of support, endowed scholarships to help students succeed, worked to restore sight to the blind living in India, provided the seed money for a healthcare program in Kenya, and have traveled to Ethiopia to help aid the sick.  When natural disasters struck India in 1994, 2001 and again in 2006, the Shahs donated funds and visited the sites to volunteer their time.

The Shahs personal volunteer efforts and philanthropy- locally, nationally and worldwide- are their abiding passions.  For their lifetime of service to humanity, Hasu and Hersha Shah are true inspirations who represent everything that is good about the American spirit.
