9/11/14 marks the 13th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.  It is a day to remember and honor those who were lost, their families and the toll it took on all of us. It is the National Day of Service and Remembrance. I hope you will join millions of others on this day who are choosing to honor and remember through volunteer service.

William Rodgers Convocation Speech to Incoming Freshman at Rutgers main image

William Rodgers, a great friend and supporter of United Way, gave the following convocation speech to the incoming freshman class at Rutgers last week. In it, he asks the incoming class to consider committing to three principles as they embark on their college careers: to become a life-long learner, an independent thinker and a responsible citizen--principles that we all need to keep close at heart on our personal paths to LIVE UNITED. We couldn’t let his speech come to pass without sharing it again, with hopes that it inspires even more of us to ask to ourselves, What can I do to advance the common good today?

Celebrate Seniors.  Volunteer. main image

August 21 is National Senior Citizen Day. Created by President Reagan and Congress in 1988, the purpose of the day is to highlight ways to show gratitude to America’s senior citizens.  One way to show older adults that we appreciate their contributions to our society is to volunteer, either alongside them or through projects designed to make life better for them.
