United Way holds inaugural Student United Way Awards

Brian Gallagher, CEO of United Way Worldwide, presented Student United Way Awards on Friday May 6, 2011 in Orlando, Florida at the annual Staff Leaders Conference with more than 1,800 local representatives from the United Way network present. Accepting on behalf of their Student United Ways: Alicia Hetrick (Cornell University); Ashley Rembert (Florida State University); Alexandria Lee (Saint Louis University); Mycal Hixon (University of Florida).

Last week, United Way Worldwide launched a program to recognize young leaders across the country who are advancing the common good by giving, advocating and volunteering in an effort to improve local communities in the areas of education, income and health. They are doing so through a powerful movement called Student United Way. More

Monday is Tax Day! Do you qualify for free tax preperation?

United Way is committed to improving financial stability. Part of this includes helping hardworking people obtain free tax preparation and filing services as well as qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and other credits. Last year, United Way and its parnters helped return almost $2 billion in total tax refunds to individuals and families, who often used those dollars to pay bills and purchase necessities, such as food and clothing. It also saved people nearly $200 million in paid tax preparer fees.Make sure you take advantage of these resources while there's still time! More

United Way Alternative Spring Break Begins

Starting this week, students across the country will trade swim trunks for tool belts and team up with United Way to make a meaningful impact in communities across the country. The work begins along the Mississippi Gulf Coast where over 50 student volunteers have converged to get to work in Biloxi, MS. Teams of students will work throughout the week on a variety of projects, some still related to Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts, other projects will focus on those underlying issues that keep individuals and families from achieving their full potential. More

UPS partners with Inland Empire United Way’s Kids Pack Program

UPS is helping kids get needed nutrition through their yearlong partnership with Inland Empire United Way’s Kids Pack Program. This program serves 1,200 hungry children a week, by providing homeless and very low-income children with backpacks filled with nutritious food to eat during the weekends, when free school meals are not available.
