United Way holds inaugural Student United Way Awards

Brian Gallagher, CEO of United Way Worldwide, presented Student United Way Awards on Friday May 6, 2011 in Orlando, Florida at the annual Staff Leaders Conference with more than 1,800 local representatives from the United Way network present. Accepting on behalf of their Student United Ways: Alicia Hetrick (Cornell University); Ashley Rembert (Florida State University); Alexandria Lee (Saint Louis University); Mycal Hixon (University of Florida).

Last week, United Way Worldwide launched a program to recognize young leaders across the country who are advancing the common good by giving, advocating and volunteering in an effort to improve local communities in the areas of education, income and health. United Way Alternative Spring Break Begins

Starting this week, students across the country will trade swim trunks for tool belts and team up with United Way to make a meaningful impact in communities across the country. The work begins along the Mississippi Gulf Coast where over 50 student volunteers have converged to get to work in Biloxi, MS. Teams of students will work throughout the week on a variety of projects, some still related to Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts, other projects will focus on those underlying issues that keep individuals and families from achieving their full potential.
